MCE is a research centre of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross involving the collaboration of the faculties of Theology and Philosophy.
The MCE Research Centre sprung from the academic synergy and research of two professors of the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Professor Juan Andrés Mercado and Professor Martin Schlag.
Following are brief biographies of the Team.
Mons. Prof. Martin Schlag, Academic Director
Born in New York in 1964, Prof. Martin Schlag is an Austrian and American citizen. He obtained his degree in jurisprudence from the University of Vienna and holds doctorates both in law (1989) and in theology (1998). Lawyer and theologian, he was ordained a priest in 1996. Consequent upon his pastoral work in Vienna, in 2008 he became a professor of the Social Doctrine of the Church at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. In 2012, he was nominated consultor to the Pontifical Council for Peace and Justice.
Prof. Robert Gahl, Academic Vice-Director
Fr. Robert Gahl is an Associate Professor of Ethics at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he studied chemical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis and then went to Silicon Valley where he worked with control software of electron beam lithography systems. After studies in graduate philosophy at the University of Navarre, Spain, he finished his doctorate in Rome at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and did postdoctoral research at the University of Notre Dame. A professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross since 1991, he has published on natural law theory, sexual ethics, moral action, and the narrative structure of the moral life.
Miss Marta Rocchi, Executive Director & Research Assistant
Marta Rocchi obtained her Masters in Political Economy at the Sapienza University of Rome with a dissertation on reciprocity in the area of behavioral economics and econometrics. As a member of the Italian Ordine dei giornalisti, the National Professional Registry, she operates as a freelance journalist. Within MCE, Miss Rocchi is the Executive Director. She is also Research Assistant at the Universidad de Navarra.
Prof. Juan Andrés Mercado, Director Publications Office
Born in Mexico City in 1967, Prof. Juan Andrés Mercado finished his degree in philosophy at the Panamerican University (Mexico City) in 1989. He then obtained his doctorate in philosophy in the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Navarra (Pamplona, Spain) with a dissertation on David Hume (2001), the same university where he had previously obtained a PhD in the Ecclesiastical Faculty of Philosophy (1991). Prof. Mercado has taught Ethics and Introduction to Philosophy as an associate professor at the Panamerican University in Guadalajara, Mexico (1991-1993) and History of Modern Philosophy as a Lecturer at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (June 1996), where, in October 2002, he became an adjunct professor. He is also a visiting professor of IPADE Business School (Mexico City) and since 2012, he is Director of the Roman branch of “Carlos Llano” Studies, whose seat is at IPADE Business School.
Viviana Spagnuolo, Publications Office
Viviana holds a Bachelor Degree in Foreign Languages and Cultures at the University Roma 3, and she holds DITALS certification to teaching Italian for foreign people. Within MCE she cares of Publications Office.
Miss Giovanna Buono, Backoffice and Event Manager
Giovanna Buono holds a Bachelor’s degree as Translator and Interpreter at the University Of Naples L’Orientale. She continued her studies at the Sapienza University of Rome obtaining a Master’s degree as Technical- Scientific Translator. She also collaborated as translator and interpreter with the Campania Superintendence of Archives and Sapienza University Of Rome at Engineer Faculty. Within MCE Miss Buono is currently the backoffice and event manager.
Miss Elizabeth Mary Reichert, Research Assistant
From the United States, Elizabeth holds degrees in theology and philosophy from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. She completed her masters in religious education with a concentration in education for peace and justice at Fordham University (New York), and then continued her theological studies at the University of Navarra (Pamplona, Spain). Currently she obtained a licentiate in moral theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome and she is Research Assistant at MCE.
Andrea Roncella, Research Assistant
Born in Rome in 1990. High School diploma with specialization in classical studies (Latin and Greek) at the High school E.Q. Visconti in 2009 . Bachelor degree in Economics and Management at the Luiss University (2012). Master's degree in Economics and Finance at the Luiss University (2014). Research Assistant at MCE since November 2013.
Dr. Daniela Ortiz, Research Assistant
In 2003 she obtained a diploma in Business Administration from the University of Innsbruck. Since 2005 she is a teacher and a research assistant at the Department of Economics and Law, Management Center Innsbruck. She teaches business ethics, research methods and project management. In 2014, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis in the field of political philosophy at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. Within MCE, she is currently conducting a research on poverty and inequality.
Germán R. Scalzo , Research Assistant
Germán earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the Austral University (Argentina), as well as a Master's and PhD in Government and Organizational Culture from the University of Navarra (Spain). He has conducted research stays at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and The Catholic University of America and, in 2013, he won the Robin Cosgrove Prize for Ethics in Finance. He is currently a professor of Business Ethics at Universidad Panamericana (Mexico), as well as a visiting professor at Universidad Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo (Peru) and Strathmore University (Kenya).
Dr. Alberto Gil, Visiting Professor
Born in Madrid in 1952, Dr. Gil studied at the Complutense University of Madrid in the faculty of Philosophy and Literature. He then continued his studies in the area of Classical Philology (Latin and Geek) at the University of Bonn and the University of Colonia; he obtained his doctoral degree in Classical and Spanish Philology (1979) at the latter. Professor Gil has taught at the University of Saarbrucken and was a visiting professor at Montevideo, Concepción, Madrid, and Buenos Aires. He is currently the Director of the Department of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Saarbrucken
Dr. Joaquín Gómez Blanes, Visiting Lecturer
Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1964, Dr. Gómez Blanes graduated with a degree in Economics and Trade from the Complutense University of Madrid (1988) and a license in Moral Theology from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross (2002). He is currently the Director of Promotion and Fundraising at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. Previously, he held the positions of Director of Promotion and Development (2008-2011), Director of the Office of Communications (2006-2009); and Director of the Office of Student Assistance. He also has experience as a teacher of leadership and ethics in the fields of business and entrepreneurship.
